Controls

Laser Adjustment
When top rail mounted, the co-located IR & VIS dot lasers rest directly above the barrel’s centerline. Adjusters on the top and side of the housing adjust the windage and elevation settings, respectively.  Detents acting on the adjusters provide tactile adjustment feedback.  Each detent represents an approximate ¼ mrad angular movement of the lasers. These adjusters may be manipulated with a flat-blade screwdriver, coin, or the bent tip of a spent cartridge. Do not attempt to force the adjusters beyond their natural limits of travel.

Adjustable Focus IR Illuminator
The ACAL’s IR illuminator offers adjustability between beam angles of 6° and 25°.  Markings on the housing indicate the bezel movement required to transition from narrow focus to wide area flood. Do not attempt to force the bezel beyond the natural limits of travel.

Fire Button
The fire button allows the user to activate the source(s) as prescribed by the mode selector knob’s position. Two (2) types of activation are available - momentary pressure and continuous on. Momentary activation is achieved by the persistent application of pressure to the button. Continuous activation is achieved by a pair of successive depressions of the button. Once active in this state, a 5-minute timer is started. At the end of this period, the sources will automatically shut off. The ACAL’s mode selector knob offers seven (7) modes of operation. Each position is marked on the rear face of the housing. An explanation of each mode is as follows:

Function

Meaning

HI VIS

Visible Laser, High Power

LO VIS

Visible Laser, Low Power

OFF

System OFF

LO IR

Infrared Laser, Low Power

LO PNT ILL

Infrared Laser & Illuminator, Low Power

HI IR

Infrared Laser, High Power

HI PNT ILL

Infrared Laser & Illuminator, High Power

*In modes where both IR sources are active, either one may be blocked by use of its respective dust cover.

Cable Ports

Remote Activation Port
The remote activation CRANE port is un-labeled. It is configured to replicate the behavior of the fire button.

Visible Override Port
The CRANE port labeled VO controls the ACAL's visible override functionality.  Input into this port will result in the activation of the like-power level mode of the visible laser. (only when ACAL is in an IR mode) For example, if the unit is set to HI PNT ILL and a remote switch plugged into the VO port is depressed, the first depression will cancel the HI PNT ILL output, and the second depression will result in HI VIS activation.

Battery
The ACAL operates on a single CR123 battery. The use of a high-quality name-brand battery is recommended. (we recommend Tenergy or Surefire CR123A single use cells) Ensure that the battery is installed in the proper orientation (the ACAL housing includes battery polarity markings), and that the battery cap is tightened until it can no longer be turned. The battery cap and battery threads feature o-ring seals to prevent the ingress of water.  While changing out batteries, a visual inspection of these seals is recommended. The ACAL features a voltage-based low-battery indicator.  When the battery’s voltage reaches a predefined level, the activation indicator LED will begin to flash. It's battery replacement time! We DO recommend the installation of a fresh battery cell before every firearm session or activity.  This will guarantee optimal ACAL performance, brightness, and runtimes.

Mounting

Standard Clamp Mount
Attach your ACAL to any standard MIL-STD-1913 rail with our lug/bolt clamp mount. Or by installing the optional ADM quick-disconnect (QD) lever-style mount.

Optional ADM QD Lever
When installing the QD mount, use of the Z-BOLT® nut adapter is required to properly engage the ADM assembly with the ACAL’s mount assembly retention pin.  Please follow all ADM instructions when installing their mount and setting its clamping pressure. The mount assembly retention pin can be removed by using a 5/64” hex key.  It is recommended to use a light thread locker (such as Blue Loctite®, or Vibra-Tite®) on the mount assembly retention pin when reinstalling.  Apply forward pressure (toward the weapon’s muzzle) when mounting - so that the mount’s recoil lug is in contact with the forward surface of the selected slot. When using the lug/bolt (13/32” spanner) mount, a torque of 20-25 in-lb. is recommended.  The nut has been knurled for hand-tightening, but an adjustable wrench may be used with care.  As with all accessories, the ACAL and rifle should be cleaned prior to mounting.

Immersion
The ACAL has been designed to withstand 5m of immersion for 30 minutes.  Should immersion or wet conditions be anticipated, it is necessary to ensure that that battery cap is secure, and its seals are in good condition, prior to such an exposure.

Cleaning
The exterior of the ACAL is generally comprised of aluminum with a hard-anodized finish.  Cleaners typically used on other firearm surfaces will generally not degrade the finish of the ACAL, but we recommend use of a light detergent (water and dish soap, or similar) for any degreasing and cleaning.  Care should be taken when using solvents on or around any rubber or plastic components as we can’t predict all potential interactions.  All glass surfaces may be kept cleaned using common glass cleaning products, but 90% Isopropyl Alcohol works well.

Important Notices - Safety Precautions
1.  Avoid direct eye & skin exposure.
2. DO NOT look directly into the laser beam or illuminator.
3. DO NOT point the laser beam or illuminator at mirrored surfaces.
4. Ensure the firearm is unloaded & safe by removing the ammunition and magazines - then verify an empty chamber before installation. Safe firearm handling rules should be followed at all times.
